Pale

Pale today

Nowadays Pale is a university, cultural, sports and tourist center that pays great attention to young people and their education. In addition to education, sport is one of the main preoccupations, and skiing is naturally a favorite discipline. As in the past, Pale is still an important traffic link between the Sarajevo valley and Podrinje.

It covers 493 km² of territory that is distinctly mountainous, with an altitude of 624 (Miljacka canyon) to 1,916 m (Ogorjelica on Jahorina).

The center of the municipality of Pale covers an area of 8.5 km², and is located at an average altitude of about 820m. Urbanized and located in the valley between the mountain massifs of Romanija (from the northeast), Gosina (from the east), Ozren (from the north and northwest), Trebević (from the west), Ravna Planina and Jahorina (from the south).

Pale can also boast of very high quality air, which is logical if we take into account the fact that about 65% of the territory of the municipality is covered with beautiful, mostly coniferous forests. Plains, forests, water springs, mountains and other natural beauties set the municipality of Pale apart as a prestigious tourist place that inherits the tradition of an air spa and a famous picnic area. In addition, Pale is a world-famous destination and a kind of winter tourist center with excellent ski slopes on the Olympic mountain of Jahorina and Ravna Planina, which boast modern infrastructure (ski slopes, cable cars, ski lifts, gondolas, mountain bob and the like). Most of the hotels are a combination of tradition and modern design, where all the advantages and functionality of modern construction are clearly emphasized, but the feeling of warmth and tradition of mountain style is not lost.

The same can be said for the entire territory of the municipality of Pale, which is very interesting and rich in natural, cultural and historical heritage, but it is also a modern municipality whose infrastructure can be compared to world tourist centers. It has almost entirely preserved the undisturbed nature, with a pleasant microclimate, coniferous forests and other vegetation, as well as interesting geomorphological, geological-paleontological and hydrological values. The areas of Jahorina, Romanija and Trebević are real nature parks and climatic health resorts characterized by representativeness, ambient and landscape values, beauty and richness of forests, pastures and wildlife, cultural and historical heritage and favorable geographical position.

In the lower parts of the municipality the climate is moderately warm and humid, while in the higher areas it is moderately cold and humid. Both climates are characterized by an even distribution of precipitation throughout the year without a dry period. From 1.000 m above sea level, it turns into a mountain climate whose sharpness is felt even in summer because the air temperature rarely exceeds 25° C.

In addition to the world-famous mountains on the territory of the municipality of Pale, there are several famous caves: Orlovača, a cave at the spring of the Mokranjska Miljacka, Popova Cave, Novak’s Cave and others.

The most famous of these is certainly the Orlovača cave (or Sava’s cave), which is arranged for tourist visits, and is located on the hill of the same name in the western part of the Romanija arch. The Novak’s cave is of great historical significance, and the cave at the spring of the Mokranjska Miljacka is one of the longest documented caves in the Republic of Srpska (over 7.100m of the cave has been explored). Endemic species of animals were found in Orlovača and in the cave at the spring of the Mokranjska Miljacka, and archeological research of the entire region confirmed the historical significance of the territory of the municipality of Pale.
