FLORA AND FAUNA

The forests in Pale occupy a large area, primarily due to geological factors, specifically developed relief morphology and various local climatic influences. About 65% of the territory of the municipality of Pale is covered with beautiful forests. Coniferous forests are dominant, but this municipality is also rich in deciduous forests. In certain areas of the municipality, beeches dominate, i.e. beech-fir forests, as well as fir-spruce forests. In some places you can find groups of mountain maple (mostly on the slopes of Jahorina towards Ravna planina).

Jahorina owes its name to the maple. The green decor of the Pale forests has a refreshing effect on visitors. Coniferous forests are especially important for their fragrant resins. A significant part of the Pale flora is occupied by blueberries, and it is necessary to mention juniper, spruce, dogwood, thorns, rose hips, black marshmallow, buckthorn, wild strawberry, buckrams (wild garlic), bitterwort, mint, thyme, chamomile, St. John’s wort, lemon balm, yarrow, different sorts of mushrooms and many other medicinal plants. Jahorina and Romanija are very rich in medicinal herbs, as well as the areas along the rivers of Pale.

Biodiversity is very diverse, and some endemic species of insects have been found in the caves of Pale. Nature has given the municipality of Pale a diverse animal world – deer, partridge, pheasant, hazel, wild duck, bear, wild boar, fox, wolf, rabbit, marten, skunk, badger, otter, various species of birds and fish.
