The Orlovača cave

Orlovača is one of the most beautiful caves in the Republic of Srpska and certainly the most famous cave in the municipality of Pale. Stalagmites, stalactites and halactites of the Orlovača cave are unique decorations of various shapes and different colors. Petrified waterfalls, coral jewelry and bigrene tubs filled with water complete the ambience and gives Orlovača a magical note. In this rich speleological object more than 16 thousand years ago lived a distant ancestor of the brown bear (Ursus arctos), which is a cave bear (Ursus speleus).

Orlovača is still the habitat of the most endangered group of mammals in Europe – the bat (Microc hypoptrea), which belongs to the endemic entemofauna. In addition to the bones of the cave bear, certain archaeological details were found, such as fragments of Mesolithic pottery, then ammonites – inhabitants of the Mesozoic Sea, an ax between 2,500 and 3,500 years old, and bricks from the period of ancient Rome.

Some of these finds can be seen in the museum located below the Orlovača cave. More than 2.5 km of cave channels have been explored, and over 560 m have been arranged for tourists with concrete paths and modern lighting. Orlovača is located on the eponymous rocky hill (1056 m above sea level) in Sumbulovac and the hamlet of Donje Sinjevo – 10 km from the center of Pale and 1 km from the main road. The Orlovača rock has a very developed speleological system intersected by numerous cracks that played an important role in the creation of underground canals that the water widened over time creating spacious canals and halls. The base of the cave consists of one main and several smaller canals, one of which ends in a permanent underground course of the Sinjava river. The cave can be visited only accompanied by an expert guide, and the tour lasts from 30 to 45 minutes in the period from April 15 to October 15. Due to the protection of the cave fauna, visitors must strictly adhere to the rules set by the guide service.
